James Frey tries again

Published by Samantha at 5:48 pm under Authors, News Edit This

Frey at the infamous Oprah interview Who doesn’t remember the 2006 feeding frenzy that was A Million Little Pieces? James Frey, author of the memoir that was later revealed to contain fabricated details, will probably remember that debacle longer than anyone. However, rather than letting his all-too-public Oprah-delivered admonishment defeat him, Frey is proving his staying power with a new book.

Bright Shiny Morning is Frey’s first novel, published by Harper Collins. It is set in Los Angeles and tells the stories of several characters, said to be “archetypes” of the city in an NPR interview. The novel includes researched facts about LA history - facts for which Frey said he was made to cite his sources.

And in case anyone’s paying attention, the book comes complete with a disclaimer: “Nothing in this book should be considered accurate or reliable.”

I’ve been hearing a lot of hype about this book being one of the “it” books this seasons. I’m waiting until I actually hear from some other book lovers that I know whether it’s work picking up.

I think I’ll do the same. Based on articles I’ve read about it, it sounds like it could go either way.
