New book delves into Dylan
With the recent renewed interest in Bob Dylan lately, it’s no surprise to hear that a new book about the legendary folk singer has been published. What is unusual, however, is the book’s point of view.
A Freewheelin’ Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties is written by Suze Rotolo, a former girlfriend of Dylan. A young woman immersed in arts and politics, Rotolo met Dylan at a folk concert in 1961. When she was 17, the two began a four-year relationship which saw the creation of some of Dylan’s most popular songs. She was even on the cover of Dylan’s “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” album. Rotolo introduced Dylan to many of the elements that would shape his life, but his immense celebrity proved the end of their relationship.
It’s unusual to see books written by women about the folk music scene, so this perspective is welcomed. The book is also being lauded for its fair and measured portrayal of Bob Dylan, with little in the way of dirty laundry. Dylan fans should have a look!
